Hearing loss is nearly twice as common in adults with diabetes, according to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Yet hearing screenings are often not part of the regular regimen of care that people with diabetes receive. Elite Audiology and BHI are urging all Americans to take the Diabetes Risk Test and to get their hearing screened. Elite Audiology is providing free hearing screenings during the month of March to anyone with diabetes, pre-diabetes or a suspected hearing loss.

Numerous studies have linked untreated hearing loss to increased worker absenteeism and reduced worker productivity. Hearing loss is also associated with a wide range of physical and emotional conditions such as impaired memory, compromised ability to learn new tasks, reduced alertness, increased personal safety risks, irritability, negativism, anger, fatigue, tension, stress, depression, and a decrease in overall health. Audiology Services is urging people to use sound judgment and ear plugs in celebrating the 4th of July, America’s noisiest day of the year. The single bang of a firecracker at close range can permanently damage hearing in an instant. Loudness is measured in decibels, with silence measuring at approximately 20 dB sound pressure level (SPL). Any noise above 85 dB SPL is considered unsafe. Most firecrackers produce sounds starting at 125 dB SPL–presenting the risk of irreversible ear damage.
